Appeal for Keith Boykin Successful!

On Tuesday night, Pride Alliance, the Association of Black Students, and X-Magazine successfully appealed for $9,500 to bring Keith Boykin to speak at WashU.

Mr. Boykin has written extensively on the intersection of race and sexuality. He is currently a TV Host for BET, and has previously served as an assistant to President Clinton. For more information, visit his website:

Hey Pride!

Gaypril (April) has finally arrived and Pride has some great events coming up that you don't want to miss.

1.) Our next general body meeting will be this Wednesday, April 8th, in the DUC room 234. We will be watching part of a "Transgeneration" episode (a documentary about transgender college students) and having a brief discussion afterward.

2.) Gayla is on April 18th, from 9-12 in Holmes Lounge. The theme this year is Le Chocolat. You can't miss this one.

3.) Controversy and Coffee's monthly discussion will be centered around gay marriage. Be there April 14th at 7 in DUC 276 to share your opinion.

4.)Pride is participating in a 6v6 soccer tourament. If you are interested, please email the Pride account: pridewu@gmail.com

5.) The Episcopal Campus Ministry just became an Oasis Congregation (this basically means they are super LGBT friendly)! Yay!

1) St. Louis QFest - "Between Love and Goodbye," 7pm Mon. March 16 @ the Tivoli: Join members of Pride Alliance tomorrow as we attend a screening of "Between Love and Goodbye" (trailer: http://lovegoodbye.com/), a part of the St. Louis LGBTQ Film Festival. Meet outside the Tivoli at 6:45, and make sure you give your ticket stub to an Exec member--Pride will subsidize you!

2) Pride Alliance Panel on LGBT Rights, 7-9pm Wed. March 18 in Seigle 204: Know your rights! Pride will be hosting a panel from 7-8 with members of the MO gay caucus speaking on LGBT rights, and PROMO will be doing a Lobby Day training from 8 to 9. Queer Retreat Registration Form

Pride Alliance will be having its first annual 24-hour queer retreat, Destination Q, from 6pm to 6pm on March 27-28 at Kiwanis Camp Wyman in Eureka, MO.

Attached is the registration form. Because space at the retreat will be limited, we will be accepting registration forms on a first-come, first-serve basis. We recommend that you turn in your form as soon as possible to make sure you get a slot!

Registration requires a $15 down-payment that will be given back to you at the retreat, but forms turned into the Pride mailbox on the second floor of SU in the DUC by noon tomorrow (Friday March 6, 2009) can be submitted with only a $10 deposit. Hurry up and turn in your registration form--you don't wanna miss out on this great opportunity to learn more about yourself and make lasting new friendships.

Drag Show & More!

We have a plethora of amazing events coming up this month and next. So, put these on your calendar and we'll see you there.

1.) DRAG SHOW THIS FRIDAY! 7-9 in the Gargoyle. The ticket prices are $3 for students and $5 for non-students, which we will be selling in the DUC on Tuesday and Thursday and in Mallinkrodt Wednesday and Friday from 11-1. We will also be selling tickets at the door the night of the show. You can pay with cash or your campus card.

2.)Q-Fest, a film festival that specializes in the "art of contemporary gay cinema" is coming to the Tivoli Theatre March 15-18. Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for everyone else.

3.) The College Democrats are bringing Roy Zimmerman, a comic musician that sings politically themed songs, to Wash U. He'll be playing in the Gargoyle on Thursday night at 10 PM. Click here for the Facebook event. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=52954384892&ref=ts

5.) Carra Greenburg, a Wash U alum, made a documentary about Prop 8. Pride is trying to show a screening here on campus so keep your eyes out for that. For more info about the film visit prop8films.org

GBM on LGBT Housing Issues

Come on out and join us at our GBM this Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in Ursa's Fireside. The topic is LGBT housing at WashU, and we'll be sharing stories with representatives from Residential Life about issues related to campus housing for LGBTQIA members of the WU community. This is a great opportunity to make your voice heard.

We'll also be selling tickets at the GBM for our 3rd Annual Drag Show on Friday February 27th, so make sure to bring $3 or your campus card. You won't wanna miss this show...

Hey Pride,

Thanks to everyone who attended our first general body meeting last Wednesday. We discussed our upcoming events for the semester, announced our new years resolutions, and talked about possible political changes to come with a new president in office.
Here are some things to put on your calenders:

1. The regional LGBT conference (MBLTGTACC) is being held at Indiana University this year during the weekend of Valentine's Day (February 13-15th). There is limited space so if you are interested in going, please send us an e-mail by this Friday January 30th. Slots will be filled first come first served. The registration fee is $60 which you will pay up front and then will be returned to you after you attend the conference. If you are not able to pay the $60 fee up front, let us know and we will discuss other options.

2. Our next GBM will be February 4th in Ursa's. See you there!

Well the semester is underway and after our first GBM yesterday, things are already off to a great start. Our fabulous new Pride Exec board has lots of exciting ideas for the upcoming three months, so you can rest assured that we'll be working hard to make this one of Pride's best semesters yet.

The dates for our three main events for the semester have all been booked and our committees are hard at work putting them together , so be sure to mark your calendar for the following days:

Two quick things to tell you about.

1) In the DUC, 11-2 Monday Dec. 8th: Postcards to Obama
If you weren't able to attend Pride last GBM stop by the Duc and send a postcard to President-Elect Barack Obama asking him to repeal Don't Ask Don't Tell, repeal Defense of Marriage Act (D.O.M.A.) and pass a transgender inclusive Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA). Tell all your friends to stop by too!

2) Chris Riha and Pride want you to see Milk at the Tivoli Dec. 9th at 7pm. Read Chris' message here:

On December 17th, I will (unfortunately) be turning 23 years old and I only want one thing for my birthday. I want to get the largest group possible together to see Milk at the Tivoli on Tuesday, December 9th at 7:00pm. I've already seen Milk once, and it was phenomenal and completely inspiring. However, I left the theater very angry with myself because before this movie was announced, I had no idea who Harvey Milk was and what he had sacrificed for me. All I want for my birthday is for people to come see this movie with me so that I can say, on a very small level, that I was able to do something good to honor this man's memory. Please feel free to invite people that I don't even know to come along to this movie. I want to see everyone there.

Wednesday Dec. 3rd 8p.m. Ursa's: Pride's LAST GBM
At our very last meeting we'll be writing postcards to President-Elect Barack Obama to hold him to his campaign promises to the LGBTQA community. We'll also hold elections and welcome new exec members. Come vote and ensure that Pride takes the direction you want. We'll also have really delicious pizza from the restaurant Pie on the loop.

Thursday Dec. 4th 7pm DUC Rm 234: Keshet's Trans Health Forum
Join health care professionals and trans folk for a discussion about health care resources in the Saint Louis region. Especially to everyone who attended the TDOR Vigil, this is a great way to explore another aspect of trans issues in greater depth.

Friday Dec. 5th 8pm Webster University: 2nd Annual World AIDS Day Concert
Webster hosts a concert to raise money for St. Louis Effort for AIDS. The performers this year are God-des and She, a really talented R&B and rap group featured on the L word and they performed at this year's St. Louis Pride Parade.

Anti-Prop 8 Rally: Join the Impact

As you know, last Tuesday, California passed Prop 8, an amendment that bans gay marriage. This Saturday, cities around the country will protest this outcome.

The St Louis protest will take place from 12 noon- 2PM on the steps of the Old Courthouse, on Broadway and Market St in downtown St Louis. Pride Alliance will be meeting at the Clocktower on Saturday at 11AM, and then will take the Metro downtown.

We'll also be making signs and posters in the Pride suite (Women's Building Room 300) this Friday from 2-4PM. Stop by and make a sign or grab a button.

Post-Election Hoopla

Election day will be a long day for a lot of us, so what better way to recoup than to hang out with Pride people, swap election day stories, eat cookies, and either celebrate or mourn together? We'll also have some speakers talk about their political involvement and how you can get involved too. Click on the title to follow a link to the facebook event.

Voting

While voting for President is important, do you know who you're voting for for Governor? State Treasurer? State Senate? Especially since a lot of LGBTQIA equality legislation happens on a state level (nondiscrimination legislation and legalization of same-sex marriage have all happened on a state level), local politics really matter for the LGBTQIA community. PROMO, Missouri's LGBT equality and political action group has a list of endorsed candidates for MO. Take a look and support progressive candidates: http://www.promopac.org/.
And if you are voting in CA, be sure to vote "no" on Prop 8 to ensure that the same-sex marriage decision by CA's supreme court is not overturned.

Awareness Week Oct. 6th-10th

Oct. 6th: Safezones Coming Out Discussion in Pride Suite at 8pm
Discuss the coming out process and the challenges and rewards it brings.

Oct. 7th: Connect 4, Safezones and Pride Alliance Town Hall in Eads 215 at 8pm
Are allies a part of the LGBTQIA community at Washu? What does it mean to be an ally? Who is an ally? Come discuss ally identity and how allies make up a part of the LGBTQIA community generally and in regard to political rights.

Oct. 8th: Brown bag lunch and showing of Transgeneration in the Pride Suite at 11:30-1pm
Bring your lunch up to the Pride suite (third floor women's building end of the hall) and watch an episode of Transgeneration, a documentary which follows college students who identity as transgender. Snacks and drinks provided.

Oct. 8th: Co-sponsored by Liggett/Koenig Showing of the Laramie Project in Ursa's Stageside at 8pm
This year is the 10th anniversary of the hate crime that resulted in Matthew Shepherd's death in Laramie, Wyoming. Come watch the Laramie project which tells the stories of the members of the Laramie community.

Oct. 9th: Showing of "For the Bible Tells Me So" followed by a panel discussion in Brown 100 at 8pm, co-sponsored with the HRC
"For the Bible Tells Me So" is an extremely well produced and emotionally moving movie which dissects the relationship between the bible and homophobia in America today. After the showing we will have a panel discussion of religious leaders.

Oct. 10th: National Coming Out Day
11-1pm stop by Mallinckrodt to make your own coming out buttons (you can come out as liking to eat in the bath tub or other quirky things)
9pm-12:30am DANCE PARTY in McMillian. The theme is "Masquerade" and Pride will be providing appetizers (including a chocolate fountain), music, masks and fun.

Oct. 22nd: General Body Meeting 8pm in Ursa's Fire Side
This GBM will focus on sexual health within the LGBTQIA community. Come hear the sex education you never got in high school.

Awareness Week Approaches

Hey everyone! Awareness week and National Coming Out day is coming up soon during the week of Oct. 6th-10th. We are so excited to host a huge National Coming Out Day dance party (we have close to $2,000 for it) and we want to you to be involved in planning it.

Three events this week:

Tues. Sept. 23rd: Public Service Fair, LGBT Advocacy Open House, 6-7pm, DUC 2nd Floor Formal Lounge
Network with area LGBT focused organizations to find internships and jobs.

Weds Sept. 24th: Pride's 2nd GBM 8pm in Friedman
Come hang out, eat snacks and help plan Awareness week, National Coming Out Day Party and other events you all came up with at the first GBM.

Friday Sept. 26th-Saturday Sept. 27th: PROMO's Missouri Equality Conference in Kansas City
We have a great opportunity for you to attend PROMO's (a nonprofit LGBT advocacy group for MO) day long conference of training and workshops on topics pertaining to LGBT activism. Pride will pay your transportation, registration and hotel costs! Check out more info at www.promoonline.org. We'll leave campus Friday evening and come back Saturday evening. If you'd like to attend respond to this e-mail by the end of Tuesday with your name and the earliest time you could leave on Friday the 26th.
This is really great if you'd like to become a better LGBT activist and bond with other Pride members.

September 10 - First General Body Meeting of the Year
8 p.m.- 9 p.m. in Ursa's (location subject to change, but we'll keep you updated)
At our first GBM we will be discussing our upcoming events and forming committees to plan them, including Awareness week. Also, FREE FOOD, fun, and meeting new people. And of course Allies are encouraged to come!

1. Friday, 4/4: Pride Alliance General Body Meeting. 3PM, Pride Suite (Women's Building Room 300).
We'll be screening the Academy Award winning film "Boys Don't Cry" and discussing themes from the movie, including violence against GLBTQIA people.

2. Friday, 4/10: The GLBTQIA BBQ. 11 AM - 1 PM Bowles Plaza (outside Mallinkrodt)
As part of Celebrations weekend, Pride presents its annual BBQ. Eat FREE FOOD, meet prospective students, and buy a Pride T-shirt if you don't have one yet.

3. Saturday, 4/11: Gayla 2008. 9 PM -12 AM, Kemper Art Museum
GAYLA, our annual semi-formal will be in the Mildred Lane Kemper this year! Admission is FREE with a Wash U ID, $5 general admission. It's one of the biggest parties of the year. Bring your friends, bring your friends' friends, and maybe even a friend's friend of a friend. Basically, if you miss this, you will cry. A lot.

GBM and Upcoming Med School Panel

It's almost Friday. Hang in there! And when you're finished with classes come hang out with us in the Pride Suite. We will be having a genral body meeting TOMORROW at 3pm in the Pride Suite (3rd floor Women's Building). The meeting is drag and gender issue thremed, and we will be showing "Some Like it Hot." We hope to see you all there.

Also, thanks to everyone who came out for the drag show. It was a success and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

Next week there is an event on LGBT mental health in the WU Med School. If you are interested in attending, here are the details:
What: LGBT Mental Health Awareness Panel
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered individuals are at high risk for suicide, depression, substance abuse, partner abuse, and eating disorders. We hope to understand more regarding the etiology of these conditions and how we can provide better care to our future patients.
When: Thurs., 2/28 12-1pm
Where: Farrell Learning & Technology Center, Connell Auditorium, Med School Campus
Why: LUNCH IS INCLUDED!

Mara Keisling Speech and Safe Zones Open Ally Workshop

There are two events coming up early this week you might be interested in:

1. Guest Speaker: Mara Keisling, Exec. Director of National Center for Transgender Equality
MONDAY, Jan. 28, 7pm McMillan Cafe
Hosted by PROMO, this is the launch of the Gender Identity Project. This will
be the first in a series of Town Hall Meetings focusing on Transgender
issues and the importance of trans issues and trans-inclusion to LGBT
Equality.

2.Safe Zones Open Ally Workshop!
TUESDAY, January 29th, 7PM in the Dardick Seminar Room
LGBTQIA? What do all those letters mean, anyway? Find out at the first
Safe Zones workshop of the year! Safe Zones is an organization dedicated
to educating the campus community on LGBTQIA issues. Individuals who
complete training will receive a placard that identifies them as a safe
space.

End of Semester Events

I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving Break. This semester is almost over, but first we'd like to tell you about two upcoming things:
1. Catholicism and Homosexuality Forum
2. Final General Body Meeting of the Semester

1. The Catholic Student Center is sponosring a forum to talk about the intersection of Catholicism and homosexuality. The discussion will take place tomorrow, Wednesday, November 28th at 7 PM in the Brown Lounge (top floor of Brown Hall). It'll be a great opportunity to
learn, listen and discuss the impact of Catholic teaching with people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual and their allies. Open to all.

2. Our final general body meeting of the semester will take place next Tuesday at 8 PM in the ground floor common room of Eliot House. Take a break from studying and finals by making gingerbread houses with us! We'll also be discussing committees, upcoming conferences, open exec board positions for next semester, and starting to plan the drag show.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil, and National Mix it Up Day

There are two big programs coming up this week:
1. Mix It Up Day Lunch and Town Hall
2. International Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil

1. Tuesday, November 13th is National Mix It Up Day. There are two great events planned, so you can get free food and meet new people all day.

- From 11 Am - 1 PM in the Gargoyle, the Office of Student Activities and Campus Week of Dialogue present the Mix It Up Day lunch. Come and enjoy FREE samosas, Jimmy John's sandwiches, and Greek food! Meet people you've never met before! Learn something new about yourself! Break boundaries! Have fun! Listen to a faculty speaker talk about "mixing it up"!

- From 6-8 PM, the first ever Wash U campus-wide Town Hall discussion on prejudice and discrimination. A group of students representing over 25 on campus organizations have come together in response to the need for students to talk about discrimination on campus. From 6-7, there will be a town hall-style forum in Wilson 214 for people to share their stories and express their thoughts. From 7-8, there will be a dinner in the Mallinkrodt Food Court where we'll talk about what we can do to make Wash U an inclusive environment for EVERYONE. Come to be heard and hear others.

2. International Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil
Thursday, Nov. 15th @ 7PM
South 40 Clocktower.
Reception in The Gargoyle in Mallinkrodt Center

Join us for our annual Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil. Come together to mourn the people murdered in the past year due to anti-transgender violence. Hear the stories of people who were killed and help raise awareness about violence against those with differing gender identities and gender expressions. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Several religious leaders will be present to speak (including Father Gary Braun from the Catholic Student Center and Rev. Andrew Benko of Episcopal Campus Ministries) but the event is not inherently religious. Local transgender musician Adhamh Roland will also sing.

Awareness Week is Coming Up!

Friday, October 5: Night Out at the City Museum with SLU
When: 7:15 PM - 12 AM
Where: meet at the Clocktower at 7:15 PM
Join members of Wash U's Pride Alliance and Saint Louis University's Rainbow Alliance for a night at the city museum. The bus will be leaving from the clocktower at 7:15, so bring your $6 and be prepared to have a blast!

Sunday, October 7: Underpass Painting and Guerrilla Flyering
When: 1 PM
Where: the underpass
Help us paint the underpass and flyer campus to raise awareness about GLBTQIA issues. And oh yeah: free food!

Monday, October 8: How Do We Make Wash U a Safe Zone?
When: 8:30 - 9:30 PM
Where: May Auditorium (Simon Hall, the business school)
Join students, staff, and faculty from all over campus for a conversation about GLBTQIA issues at Washington University. How can we make Wash. U. the best possible environment for everyone?

Tuesday, October 9: Discussion on Multicultural GLBT Relationships (co-sponsored with MIXED)

An open-ended discussion on Mixed Heritage People, Interracial Relationships, and Transracial Adoptions in the GLBT Community. Possible discussions points include discrimination, representation in the media, and the role both communties play.

A panel discussion on being a GLBTQIA person in the work world. Topics to be discussed include presenting a "queer resume" and finding GLBTQIA workplaces. Juniors and seniors strongly encouraged to attend!

Thursday, October 11: National Coming Out Day Social!

Where: Ursa's Fireside
Celebrate National Coming Out Day with Pride! (get it?) AJ Brockelman, Executive Director of PROMO, Missouri's GLBT Advocacy group, will be there to talk about his organization's mission. Share your own story about coming out as a GLBTQIA person or ally, and then party it up with us.

Saturday, October 13: "I'm Still the Same" (part of Parent's Weekend)
When: 12- 1 PM
Where: Friedman Lounge in Wohl Center
An interactive discussion and presentation on coming out at college, GLBTQIA life on campus, and being the parent of a GLBTQIA student. ALL members of ALL types of families are welcome.

newly-created Cordinator for LGBT Student Involvement & Leadership

open house, hosted by Pride Alliance, meet one of the candidates, and
grab some free food and gear (buttons, ribbons, and the like.) All are

2) Day of Silence & "Breaking the Silence": Wed 4/18

The National Day of Silence (http://www.dayofsilence.org) is a day in
which people of all sexual orientations and gender identities who
support GLBTQIA rights take a vow of silence to recognize and protest
the silence that many GLBTQIA people face each day. Every year we hope
that the silence, discrimination, and violence directed at GLBTQIA
people will end.

Join PROF. SUSAN STIRITZ of Women's and Gender Studies, and Student
Union President-Elect NEIL PATEL that evening for our "Breaking the

speak about being asexual and asexuality. Come debunk myths and learn

Come see some of your fellow students modeling this season's best Kinky Kouture! Wear your own fetish fashions or buy some new ones from vendors and compete in clothing contests. Students get a free raffle ticket upon entrance (drawings every half hour-- must be present to win). Attendees also receive special raffle tickets from vendors for every $10 spent. Vendors open for business at 4pm; entertainment, including DJ, pole acrobats ( Gravity Plays Favorites, as seen performing with The Dresden Dolls), and Siren, the lovely emcee from the drag show, will be 7-10:30 pm in the Gargoyle. This event will go through 14 scenarios dealing with marital sex, marital rape and assault, workplace relationships, economic sex, survival sex, rape, bondage, consent issues, gay sex, youth sex, intergenerational sex, mental capacity, and disease. Each of the scenarios will be approached with the questions "Is it consensual?" "Is it legal?" and "Is it moral?" Panelists include Sergeant Mark Glenn of WUPD, Poli Rijos of Student Health Services, and Larry M., lawyer and educator with the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom as well as a founding member of St. Louis Leather & Lace. Pride Alliance Meeting & Drag Show!

To become acquainted with the group (if you aren't already) and our new exec board members, meet other students, get involved in committees (help plan the Gayla formal!), and brainstorm ideas for the semester. And, as is tradition, FREE DINNER!

2) Drop by and visit our booth during the Activities Fair today in Francis Gym 4:30-6:30 PM. Pick up some free buttons and zines secretly sign-up all of your friends who avoided getting roped into this lovely e-mail list. If you miss us, we will also be tabling all week in Mallinkrodt 11-1 PM.

3) 1st Annual Wash U DRAG SHOW! FRIDAY JAN. 26, 8 PM @ THE GARGOYLE Join Pride Alliance and the Alternative Lifestyle Association for Wash U's 1st annual DRAG SHOW! Emceed by the fabulous Siren of Faces, join us for FREE raffles, audience drag contest (come dressed in drag if you would like to enter), and of course, wonderful drag queens and kings!

Guerrilla Flyering: A Night of Noise

What's the easiest way to make sure that everyone know what the letters in GLBTQIA stand for? Well...shove it in their face! Pick up your flyers (and complimentary snack) at the Pride Suite before moving onto main campus for a massive awareness campaign of colorful flyers, each separate one dedicated to the meaning of a respective letter in the abbreviation. We want a flyer on every board on campus! Bring a trusted stapler, if you'd like. SU and CS40 posting policies will be strictly enforced and will be covered before each battalion leaves the suite.

Grrls Gone Wild! GLBQ Women Representation in the Media

Tuesday, 10/24 @ 8PM

Join us for an evening of short film clips and facilitated discussion on the representation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and queer women in the media. Some of what we will explore includes, but is not limited to, positive and negative stereotypes, recognition, visibility, invisibility, as well as sexism and misogyny within the GLBTQIA community at large. Not to be missed!

Outlook Film Series: Trembling Before G_d

Join Outlook, the GWB Social Work School's GLBT student organization, and Pride Alliance for a showing of this powerful and important documentary. Built around intimately-told personal stories of Hasidic and Orthodox Jews who are gay or lesbian, the film portrays a group of people who face a profound dilemma: how to reconcile their passionate love for Judaism and the Divine with the drastic Bible prohibitions that forbid homosexuality. Awareness Week Schedule Changes

Hello!

Thanks to everyone who came to Judy Shepard's presentation this Tuesday. It was a huge success, and I have no doubt that everyone took something away from the experience. If you have any suggestions for speakers that you would like to see next semester or next year, please feel free to offer your suggestions.

We've got a lot planned for the next month or two--so much, in fact, that some changes in our schedule are due. First, despite what previous e-mails and the handout on Tuesday have said, GLBTQIA Awareness Week will NOT be the week of October 16th--we're moving it back a week due to Fall Break and other issues. Here's the revised, hopefully final, schedule:

Next Week: No formal event planned, but feel free to drop in on our Open Exec Meeting, which will be from 6:30-8PM in the lower-level seminar room of Eliot House on Tuesday. We're going to try to make exec meetings more accessible so that we can hear what YOU want to do!
Tuesday, October 17th: Safe Zones Open Ally Workshop, 7PM, Women's Building 300.
Wednesday, October 18th: Project Runway Finale Party, 9PM, Park/Mudd TV Lounge
October 23-28th: Awareness Week!

I'll send out the Awareness Week schedule once we have everything settled. One of the events will be about lesbian and bisexual women in the media and another will hopefully be a discussion about the intersection of race, gender, and sexuality. If anyone wants to help plan for either of those two events, we'll be meeting about them separately some time next week--just e-mail us and I'll set up a time. Also, if you know of any faculty members here at WU who might be able to share their expertise on either topic, please send us their contact information. We want to make Awareness Week as interactive as possible, so whatever help you can offer will make the week even better!

Hello!

Thanks to everyone that showed up to our first meeting last week--we've looked over all of your suggestions and have come up with a great series of events for the year. We've even established a calendar for the fist half of the semester, and we promise to stick to it, like, 100%. I swear. Here it is, in chronological order:

Central West End Outing: Thursday, September 21 @ 8:10PM. Meet us at the shuttle stop at Mallinckrodt center and join us for a trip to the Central West End, a fun and very GLBT-friendly part of St. Louis. After taking the bus to the CWE, we will drop by Left Bank Books and then walk over to Cartel, a 24-hour coffee shop. Everyone who comes gets free ice cream or coffee!

Bad Education @ the Tivoli: Tuesday, September 26th @ 6:30PM. Meet by the clocktower and then get shuttled over to the Tivoli on the loop, OR meet us at the loop by 6:45. The first 15 people to RSVP to this e-mail will get reimbursed by Pride for half the ticket price! Bad Education is part of the Pedro Almodovar film festival going on at the Tivoli (and all over the country) next month. The Legacy of Matthew Shepard: Tuesday, October 3rd @ 8PM in Graham Chapel. Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard, who was the victim of an anti-gay hate crime in October 1998, will be giving a presentation about the danger and impact of hate crimes and hate language. A renowned public speaker, Ms. Shepard will offer WashU and the St. Louis community a powerful and engaging speech on her experience since her son's tragic murder. Ms. Shepard is the Executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, and all proceeds from her speaking engagements go directly to the foundation.

Awareness Week: October 16th through 20th, featuring, but not limited to, the following events:

Multiculturalism in the GLBT community: Monday, October 16th @ 8PM. Location TBA. The event will be a group discussion format--more details, including co-sponsorships, in the coming weeks.
Safe Zones Open Ally Workshop: Tuesday, October 17th from 7-10PM in Women's Building 300. Get trained!
Project Runway Season Finale Party: Wednesday, October 18th, 8:45 to 10:15PM. South 40 Location TBA. Free food and free catty commentary provided.

I hope everyone had a great summer. We have a lot of cool things planned for this semester--including an amazing speaker--but I'll keep this brief for now:

1) First Meeting of the Year! When? Wednesday, September 6th, 8PM, Where? Umrath Lounge (Next to Mallinkrodt; enter through Bowles Plaza)--I'll know within the next few days and pass it along. Why? To become acquainted with the group (if you aren't already), meet other students, meet GLBT-friendly staff and faculty, and brainstorm ideas for the semester. And, as is tradition, FREE DINNER!

2) Drop by and visit our booth during the Activities Fair next Wednesday to pick up a schedule for the year and secretly sign-up all of your friends who avoided getting roped into this lovely e-mail list. Oh, and more free food. How could I forget?

3) Become a member of the Pride Exec Board! We have some spots to fill on our exec. board and we want YOU to fill them! We have two PR positions open, but we can be creative, too, and think of other positions if people really want to help out. Reply to this e-mail ASAP and we will set up a time when you can meet with the current exec board and tell us why you want to join.

4) Check out SafeZones and Keshet, two other GLBTQIA groups on campus you might be interested in.

Sexual Orientation 2006, Pride Alliance's annual incoming student orientation event, is just around the corner! Day of Silence

Our last event of the year is Breaking the Silence: A Forum on Gendered Hate Crimes, this Wednesday, April 26th @ 7PM in Friedman Lounge in Wohl Center on the South 40.

The Day of Silence is a day in which people of all sexual orientations and gender identities who support GLBTQIA rights take a vow of silence to recognize and protest the silence that LGBTQIA people face each day. Every year we hope that the silence, discrimination, and violence directed at GLBTQIA people will end, however it is not just 'gay' people who suffer from violence or harassment. At this event we hope to raise awareness of the roles that gender and gender norms play in dictating all people's actions, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. A panel of experts will address pertinent topics that relate to this large issue, including some of the following questions:

What do you do if you see or are a survivor of a hate crime? What is a hate crime? How can you be there for a friend? What can we do to reduce the number of future hate crimes? This event will take place on April 26th on the National Day of Silence, at 7PM where we will "Break the Silence" in Friedman Lounge in Wohl Center. FREE PIZZA WILL BE PROVIDED!

I hope everyone had a great time at Gayla on Saturday--we had tons of people come and it seemed like everyone had an amazing time (the mess you guys left afterward sure hinted at that!). Hopefully it will be a WashU tradition from now on. In case you didn't know, the Gayla was the kickoff for our annual Pride Week. Here's what we have going on:

1) "Discovery" w/ Professor Leslie Brown: Tuesday, April 18th @ 8PM in Women's Building 300. Join Leslie Brown, WashU professor of history and African-American studies, for a discussion about race and GLBT issues. Professor Brown has spoken at Pride events in the past, and is an excellent lecturer and scholar. Her presentation on Tuesday will be a fitting follow-up to the joint ABS-Safe Zones-Pride Alliance meeting we had earlier this month. I hope you can join us!

2) Open Ally Workshop hosted by Safe Zones: Wednesday, April 19th from 7-10PM in Women's Building 300. Be educated on GLBT issues and earn one of those nifty placards upon graduation from the workshop. Even if you identify as G, L, B, or T, the workshop will be a mind-opening experience.

3) Brokeback Mountain Screening with CS40: Thursday, April 20th @ 8PM in Ursa's. Stop studying and relax with friends while watching this amazing, critically-aclaimed film. Free food provided!

4) glbtqiaBBQ: Friday, April 21st from 11-1PM in Bowles Plaza: Eat BBQ. Be proud. Converse with prospective students about life at WashU. Best of all: all the food is FREE! Tranny Roadshow

This Wednesday, April 12th, at 8PM in Ursa's, Pride Alliance, CS40, the Social Justice Center, and the Performing Arts Department are hosting the Tranny Roadshow. This intrepid band of performance artists, each self-identified as transgender, tours the country performing at coffee houses, colleges, and theaters. We'll have FREE FOOD, and it will be tons of fun. Relax, avoid end-of-the-year-work, and come enjoy these great performances. From their own website, www.trannyroadshow.org:

"In addition to humorists, rock bands, poets, and others, a visual art display will accompany the show. As performers, our goals do include challenging people and making them think, but our most important goals are to entertain them, make them laugh, and make them dance. We recognize that our trans identities are singular facets of who we are, and one of the aims of the Tranny Roadshow is to present transpeople as we are - whole, multi-faceted people. In the show, we present a wide spectrum of gender identities, a brilliant array of living art, and the ties that bind these identities to our artwork and to the world"

Earlier today everyone that goes to WashU should have received an e-mail from the director of the GLBTQIA Task force. The survey mentioned in it is very important for assessing the GLBTQIA climate on campus, and they want as many people as possible to fill it out, no matter how you identify. If you have time, please try to complete the survey. It only takes about 10 minutes. There's even a prize drawn randomly from those that fill it out!
"Gayla 2006: Cirque du So-Gay!" is April 15th at 9PM in McMillan Cafe and Courtyard. Buy tickets for $8 all week in Mallinckrodt from 11-2:30PM and in Wohl on the evenings of April 12th and 13th. We'll be in front of Olin Library, too, one day of the week. Be sure to stop by and get a ticket! The giant circus tent, huge dance floor, and free food and refreshments ought to be enough motivation to get you dressed up for this sure-to-be-amazing semi-formal. Tell your friends to come! Pride/ABS Event and "Gayla 2006: Cirque du So-Gay!"

Three items on the menu in the next few weeks:

On Tuesday, April 4th at 7PM in the Mudd Multipurpose Room on the South 40 we will be hosting a meeting in conjunction with the Association of Black Students (ABS) and Safe Zones about GLBT issues as they pertain to race and ethnicity. The focus of the event will be based on the "Stars" simulation featured in the Safe Zones trainings. The conversation will be thought-provoking and is sorely needed on the WashU campus, so I hope a lot of you can make it.
Tranny Road Show, April 15th, 8PM, Ursa's.
Gayla 2006: Cirque du So-Gay! will be on Saturday, April 15th, from 9PM until midnight in McMillan Cafe and Courtyard on the hilltop campus. Help kick off Pride Week 2006 with a bang! All of McMillan Cafe will be turned into a huge dance floor with non-stop music, and the courtyard will have a big circus tent with FREE refreshments inside. Tickets will be $8 and are going to go on sale starting Monday, April 10th at tables in Mallinckrodt from 11-1PM. You also might find us outside of Olin Library one day selling tickets, and--trust me--we'll be hard to miss. If you want to help out with set-up that day, or if you have any questions, just respond to this e-mail. I hope to see you there!

Welcome back!

I hope spring break was relaxing and fun for everyone. We only have six weeks of school left, but we still have tons of things planned, including our Pride Week (more details in next week's e-mail). Here are a few points of interest:

Join Pride Alliance on Wednesday, March 22nd @ 8 pm in Women's Building 300 for Bi The Way, a discussion on bisexuality and biphobia in the gay and straight communities. We will have skits, free copies of the zine "In or Out? Bisexuality & A Place to Call Home," buttons made especially for the event, and, as always, FREE FOOD. All are welcome!
The 2nd Annual Gayla Semi-Formal will be Saturday, April 15th @ 9PM in McMillan Cafe. We were forced to change the date due to an unfortunate scheduling mishap, and we hope everyone interested can still make it. Tickets will be on sale all week before the event. Many more details will emerge within the next few weeks, so keep an eye out!

First, a HUGE thanks to everyone that helped plan the protest on Saturday--it turned out really well, and I think we showed the community that WashU is active and willing to put effort into things outside our often-cited bubble. It was amazing to see all of you allies and newcomers attend the protest; I hope you come to more events in coming semesters, too. Pride is taking a brief hiatus for the next few weeks, but we will be back in full force the week following spring break. In the meantime, here are a few items that might be of interest to you:

1.) This Saturday, March 4th at 2:30 pm at Hillel (across the street from the architecture school, which is near Brookings), Keshet, the GLBTQ Jewish group, is bringing transgender, queer, and Jewish performance artist and playwright S. Bear Bergman in to perform "Clearly Marked", a play about overlapping identities and blurring labels. Following the show, there will be a Q&A discussion with Bear. Admission is FREE! If you missed "Clearly Marked" when it came to St. Louis last school year, here's another chance for you to catch it. Don't miss it! Ex-Gay Protest and Teach-In: "Love Needs No Cure"

Pride Alliance, Safe Zones, and Keshet, as part of a huge, city-wide effort, plan to hold a peaceful demonstration outside of the ex-gay Love Won Out (www.lovewonout.com) conference this Saturday. Our purpose is to offer a message of truth, love, and acceptance for LGBT families and those struggling with their sexual orientation. We will have placards, posters, ribbons, armbands, and resource info available on site. Transportation to the church site will be provided on February 25th at the South 40 clocktower at two separate times: 6:15 AM and 3:45PM. The early shift is for the arrival of the conference attendees and will be car-pool only (so if you have a car and want to drive, please respond to this e-mail). The later shift will cover the end of the conference as attendees leave, and we will provide buses. The event is officially over at 5:30PM, so expect to be back no later than 6:30PM. Prior to the departure of the second shift we will be holding a Teach-in in Ursa's Fireside at 3:00PM. The Teach-in will feature guest speakers and a panel discussion about the harmful effects of the ex-gay movement. Ex-Gays in St. Louis

On Saturday, February 25th Exodus International is holding a conference in St. Louis at the First Evangelical Free Church (perhaps you have seen the huge billboards on I-64 and 70?). Exodus promotes the "curing" and treatment of homosexuality as a mental illness, which all national psychiatric and medical organizations (and most people who have ever known any GLB people) consider complete BS. Pride Alliance, Keshet, and Safe Zones are hosting a meeting on Thursday, February 16th @ 8:30PM in Women's Building 300 (that's this Thursday!) to discuss a possible protest. We encourage you to forward this e-mail to any group or person that might be interested. If you really want to get your blood boiling, check out the Exodus website, or the website for the sickeningly named Love Won Out conference. I hope to see you at the meeting.

This Wednesday Pride Alliance and S.H.A.C. are hosting a Safer Sex event as part of Sex Week 2006. Individuals from the St. Louis Guardian Project (http://www.guardianproject.org/ ) and Project ARK (http://projectark.wustl.edu/) will be giving a presentation on safer sex in the GLB community (with a focus on male-male sex) that includes a rousing game of Safer Sex Jeopardy (could you ask for anything more?). We will have lots of free condoms and accessories available, as well as discreet, confidential HIV tests immediately after the event. The meeting well be on Wednesday, February 15th at 8PM in Women's Building 300. Be sure to come!

Other Items of Interest:
1) The Social Justice Center is holding an event on Monday, February 13th from 7-9pm in Ursa's Fireside, entitled "Tokenism and 'Diversity': The Easy Way Out." Professor Shawn Shimpach will be facilitating a discussion. There will also be free food representing different groups of people, in a tokenistic fashion. Prof. Shimpach taught the course "Freshman Seminar: Race and Ethnicity on American Television" and he will be using his expertise and material from this course to convey tokenism in the media. The discussion will touch on the larger issue of tokenism in hiring, recruiting, political appointment, public relations campaigns, etc.

2) The next Gayla Committee Meeting is Monday, February 20th at 9PM in the lower level seminar room of Eliot House on the South 40. We are still hammering out a lot of important details, and we could use all the help we can get!

3) Open Exec Meetings are starting this week! Stop by our exec meetings at 8:15PM every Thursday in the lower level seminar room of Eliot House on the South 40 to offer ideas of your own and take part in the decision-making process. We hope to see some new faces this semester!

Gays on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown

Okay. I should really stop it with the crazy titles, but they are just so much fun (I spared you last week, though--our wily treasurer really wanted to call the event "Gaym Night"). The full title of the event we have planned this week is "Gays on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown: Mental Health Issues and the GLB Community". Dr. Alan Glass, Director of Student Health and Counseling Services, will host this discussion on Tuesday, February 7th at 8PM in the NEW Student Health and Counseling Center Center on the South 40. Don't go to the old one next to Malinckrodt! The new facility is located in the basement of Forsyth House, which is accessible from Shepley Drive. Forsyth House is the very first dorm on the left when entering the 40 via Shepley Drive. Once you enter the basement it will not be hard to find us in the classroom located right off of the main lobby. Issues of mental health are rarely discussed in the specific context of gay, lesbian, and bisexual college students, so we hope that the dialogue can raise awareness about these topics and offer WashU students a valuable resource. We have worked with Dr. Glass many times in the past, and his presentations are always interactive and highly informative. Fun With Pride Alliance!

Welcome back!

I hope everyone had a relaxing break doing absolutely nothing (other than eating and sleeping). I certainly did. Alas, the school year has begun and we must become un-lazy and attend all Pride Alliance events for the entire semester. I'm not kidding. Here's what's coming up:

1) Gayla Committee Meeting: Wednesday, January 25th at 7:30PM in Women's Building 300. We have divided into sub-committees and are working on setting our wonderfully gay theme (which is top secret) into motion. The tentative date for this GLBTQIA "Formal" is April 1st, so mark your calenders.

2) Activities Fair: Thursday, January 26th from 4-6PM in the Gargoyle. We are giving away skittles by the bucket load, so at least drop by to rot your teeth (and maybe check out some of our plans for the year and contribute your own ideas).

3) Game Night: Tuesday, January 31st at 8PM in Women's Building 300. Join your fellow GLBTQIA-ers for an evening of, well, GLBTQIA-themed games and leftover skittles. What joy! Bring a friend and we will throw in an extra bag of candy. I swear it will be fun.

Those are the most immediate events we have planned. An event focusing on Mental Health hosted by Student Health and Counseling will be coming up soon. Also--just in time for a Valentine's Day tryst!--a safer sex night is in the works for the week after. Once we have the kinks in our own schedules worked out, we will publish a list of office hours so that you all can visit us during the school day.

World AIDS Week Speaker on Friday

Several Student Groups at WashU, including Pride Alliance, have contributed to bringing in Joel Goldman to speak to cap off World AIDS Week. The event will be on Friday, December 2nd at 5PM in LabSci 300 . Joel is currently living with HIV because he mixed sex with alcohol following his graduation from college. His program is part alcohol awareness, part sexual health. Joel has spoken to over a million students since 1993, earning top national honors from the Association of Fraternity Advisers and the North American Interfraternity Conference. In October 1998, he received the Ryan White Foundation's top national award for serving to the nations youth. The program Joel presents is interactive, and he uses humor and personal stories to get his message across. We hope all of you can make it!

Transgender Awareness Week

Transgender Awareness Week is next week, Nov. 14-18. We will be tabling Monday through Friday from 11AM to 1PM, so drop by if you need more information about the events, want a button or two, or want to help out. Here is what we have planned:

Transgender Panel Discussion: Tuesday, Nov. 15th @ 8PM in Lambert Lounge. Join Pride Alliance, Dr. Alan Glass (director of Student Health and Counseling Services), and several guests from the St. Louis community for a panel discussion on transgender issues. Become educated on transgender topics and listen to stories from people in the community. There will be a question and answer session following the discussion. Lambert Lounge is located in Malinckrodt Center on main campus. It is upstairs, past the bank (there will be signs).

Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil: Wednesday, Nov. 16th @ 8PM at the South 40 Clocktower. Mourn the deaths of the dozens of transgender people murdered this past year. Hear the stories of people who were killed and help raise awareness violence against those with differing gender identities or expressions. Several St. Louis religious leaders will be present to speak, but the event is not inherently religious. Following the meeting at the clocktower we will process to the Swamp, and then into Friedman Lounge in Wohl Center where our guests will speak.

Transworks: Transsexual Images by Loren Cameron: Friday, Nov. 18th @ 6PM at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum (Steinberg Auditorium). Loren Cameron's photographs have become beautiful icons of a burgeoning transgender movement. His book,"Body Alchemy: Transsexual Portraits" (1996) has been regarded as groundbreaking. In his presentation he will show some of his newest and latest work, relate his experience as a transsexual photographer as well as discuss the lives of the people he photographs. The presentation will be followed by a book-signing. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see this renowned photographer present his work!

Gayla Committee Meeting @ 7:30PM in Women's Building Suite 300 on Wednesday, Nov. 8th. If you haven't signed up for the committee, but still want to get involved, just stop by! We have about 10 people already on board, but more are certainly welcome.

Transgender Awareness Week, Nov. 14th-18th. We have four events planned for the week, including a panel discussion, the Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil, a showing of Southern Comfort , and--of course--our speaker of the semester, Trans photographer Loren Cameron on Friday, Nov. 18th. Midterm General Body Meeting

It's about half-way through the semester, so there will be a general body meeting @ 8PM Tuesday Nov. 1st in Women's Building Suite 300. Help us with the rest of this year's events, brainstorm plans for next semester, think of ideas for guest speakers, voice your comments and concerns, or just hang out and eat our left-over s'mores. This is your time to speak up, so be sure to drop by, even if just for a few minutes.

I'd like to thank everyone for the GREAT turnout at GLBTQIA Awareness Week events this year--it's the best this campus has ever had! We aren't done yet, though. There are many (seriously--many) events planned for the semester, some of which will presently be presented to you in convenient list format:

Wednesday, Oct. 19th @ 9:15PM on the S40 Swamp: "Come Out To The Sukkah" with Pride Alliance and Keshet, WashU's Jewish GLBTQIA student group. Free dessert and hot chocolate will be provided as you do arts & crafts, mingle, pick up buttons and ribbons, and--of course--have tons of fun!

Wednesday, Oct. 26th: "National Intersex Awareness Day". Details are still pending, but there will be an event that evening at 8PM in Women's Building Suite 300 relating to that mysterious "I" in the GLBTQIA alphabet soup. Expect a showing of a short film/documentary followed by a facilitated discussion.

TBA: Gayla Committee Meeting. Help organize WashU's 2nd annual GLBTQIA formal! Last year over 200 people attended, and it was a smashing success. The event will not be until late next semester (April-ish), but we must start organizing things immediately. I will lead the first meeting, but the Gayla will not be an event run by Pride Alliance--we want people from all over the WashU community. If you are interested in being on the planning committee e-mail pride@restech.wustl.edu ASAP so that we can organize a meeting time within the next few weeks. I am looking for approximately 10-12 individuals, especially people who helped out last year! Time commitment: expect to meet once or twice a month until the event.

We are tabling ALL week in Malinckrodt from 11AM-1PM to sell shirts, sign petitions, handout resource materials, and give away free buttons and ribbons. As a sign of solidarity, we ask that everyone wear a rainbow ribbon or button throughout the week. Tell your friends about our events and please try to come out and show support. I hope to see everyone at some point this week!

Saturday, Oct. 8th @ 12:30PM: "Mom, Dad, I'm Still the Same" in Women's Building, Suite 300

Come join Pride Alliance and PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians & Gays) for a Parent's Weekend discussion and question/answer session about GLBT life on campus, being a parent of a GLBT student, and how to come out to your parents as G,L,B, or T. All members of the family are welcome!

Monday, Oct. 10th @ 7PM "Guerrilla Flyering: A Night of Noise" in Women's Building, Suite 300

Basically, we want every single bulletin board on campus to have an awareness-related flyer on it. To do this, we need your help. Like, a lot. Pretty please. There will be socializing and FREE PIZZA AND SODA beforehand (it's in caps so as to entice you). Please try to bring your own stapler, but if you don't have one, we will have a few extras.

Our friends at SLU's Rainbow Alliance are hosting a panel discussion about GLBT issues on their campus. Panel members include various members from the St. Louis GLBTQA community and a wide range of topics will be covered that directly pertain to the St. Louis GLBTQA community.

Come join Pride Alliance, Keshet, and WSI (Wash U Solidarity for Israel) in a conversation about the differences between being GLBT in America and Israel @ 8PM Monday, Sept. 26th in Ursa's Fireside. Clips from Trembling Before G_d and Yossi and Jagger will be shown to entice each and every one of you to come and be cool with us (and to facilitate conversation, but that's secondary, of course).

And the year has officially begun! We wrote the constitution, you guys approved it, and now we are waiting for final administrative approval on the new Pride Alliance. Here are some upcoming events:

Come to Women’s Building Suite 300 on Tuesday September 20th @ 8PM to engage in discussion and activism centering on GLBT parenting issues. We are participating in a letter-writing campaign with PROMO (Personal Rights of Missourians) to defeat a bill in the Missouri congress that attacks GLBT parents. Representatives from PROMO and C.O.L.A.G.E (Children of Gays and Lesbians Everywhere) will be present if you have questions. Following the brief discussion we will be showing “The Birdcage” and having a jolly time.
On Thursday September 22nd @ 7PM the HRC, PROMO, and ACLU are hosting “Save the Date: LGBT Parenting Town Hall” at the Washington University School of Law, Room 204. We strongly encourage students to attend—let your voice be heard!

“Take Me Out” with the HRC on September 29th @ 7PM. Meet us at the Clock tower on the S40 on the 29th and come see the 2003 Tony Award Winner for Best Play with us! The HRC is subsidizing tickets, so we need to get them fast. If interested in seeing this provocative play about being gay in the big leagues, respond to this e-mail before the end of next week! We need to get a head count right away. Tickets are $35, which is an amazing deal for a Broadway play. We hope you can join us! Sexual Orientation 2005

Come join Spectrum Alliance for "Sexual Orientation 2005," WashU's only GLBTQA orientation event. It will be low-key, fun, and informative. Meet other incoming students (transfers welcome!) and various GLBTQA leaders on campus while enjoying rootbeer floats and other snacks. Also, we plan to introduce our proposal for Pride Alliance, the new group that will result from the fusion of Spectrum and OutRight. We hope all incoming students can join us!

FYI: the Danforth Classroom is located on the first floor of Danforth House, which is on the South 40. It will be easy to find, but discreet. Remember: your confidentiality is important to us.

NOTE: You may or may not be aware of the fact that the second showing of "The Date"--another orientation program--is scheduled right before Sexual Orientation 2005. There are discussion sessions afterwards, so the times may overlap. We have taken this into consideration and fully expect many students to come late. Don't be afraid to stop by whenever you get the chance on Sunday--we'll be waiting for you!
